Thorney vs. St Ives 2's

St Ives travelled to Thorney in the return leg of the season knowing they had to be on top form as Thorney beat St Ives at the beginning of the season 43-0. St Ives showed nothing less and was brilliant from the first whistle to the last beating Thorney 44-0.

St Ives dominated Thorney in every area of the game; the forwards started well building pressure through the 2nd row pairing of Gary Flemming and Andy Grieve who were excellent all day in the tight and the loose. Strong pressure from the pack left a gap for full back John Paxton to put winger Ben Pinion in for his first try of the game. St Ives then had to work hard to keep hold of the ball with excellent support play coming from the back row off Andy Dolby, James Cannon and Captain Oliver Scott. After a St Ives scrum fly half Jack Blackley put a cross kick over for Pinion to receive and score an easy touchdown in the corner.

St Ives carried on the good work with the front row of Pete Wood-Eeles, Chris Reay and Gez Gilbert dominating the Thorney front row which enabled Nick Gunnel to have an outstanding game at scrum half, Gunnel and Blackley controlled the game and worked together to help St Ives cruise to a comfortable half time lead by putting Paxton in for a try before half time and Blackley adding the conversion to make the half time lead 17-0 to the visitors.

The second half started in the same way for St Ives, once again a piece of brilliance from Blackley with another 'sexy' cross kick which put Pinion in for his hatrick "jug" try; once again Blackley was on hand to add the two points. Thorney then came back at St Ives which saw an awesome defensive performance by centres Stuart Cornwell and Alex Campbell with great one on one tackles by Paxton. St Ives rung the changes and once again attacked Thorney with a great back move which ended up with substitute Mike Sykes scoring the try. St Ives did not stop there and pilled on the pressure after a strong run from international debutnt Tom Williamson allowed Captain Scott to score with a drive over the line.

St Ives didn’t stop attacking the home side and with a quick break made by Paxton who unselfishly set up man of the match Pinion for his forth try.

This score killed of Thorney, but there was still time for one more St Ives try which came from an excellent run by Gunnel who found Blackley in support who was able to put Tommy 'Trevor Leota' Newmen in for a try to make the final score 44-0 to St Ives.

After the game St Ives Second Team Captain Oliver Scott said “I am delighted; we deserved this score line today; every member of my team gave 100%, we dominated Thorney from the first minute. It's a much deserved win for what we have been working on for a couple of weeks now, we were truly devastating today".
