10 Saints a Scoring!
Match Report for December 18th, 2004
Deepings 2nds 0 – St Ives 2nds 60
2nd team captain, Rob Marland, managed to pull together 15 players for this, St Ives’ final fixture of 2004. The 1st team and the Old Bulls were both in the pool, but unfortunately did not manage to get a game.
Optimism was high on the day; despite players having to play out of position (having 5 2nd Rows did not help the situation!). The game started brightly with St Ives stealing the ball soon after the kick off. This led to some good phases, resulting in a scrum just off the Deepings 5m line. With 5 2nd Rows in the scrum, stability was never really going to be an issue, and from a solid base Ross Thompson capitalised at No. 8 and crossed the line after 5 minutes.
This opened up the floodgates for St Ives, helped by poor tackling by Deepings. The first half saw some brilliant breaks by John Paxton at scrum half, Mike Sykes at full back and Chicken Wing playing on the left wing. Some good play by the centre partnership of Vince Woodward and Dave Sykes (when Jack Blackley passed the ball!) opened holes in the Deepings back line, allowing a plethora of tries to be scored.
The 2nd half proved a different display. Deepings regained composure, but lack of possession denied them any real attacking platform. Some good stealing play from forwards and backs alike starved Deepings of useful ball. With the 1st half being dominated by individual efforts, the emphasis in the 2nd half was on team play. Some good phase rugby followed and was it not for the greediness of Jack Black at fly half, many try was on offer.
The full list of try scorers is as follows:
John Paxton x 2, Chicken Wing x 2, Pete Kalvert, Ross Thompson, Vince Woodward, Mike Sykes, Dave Sykes and Jack Blackley (Dubious decision!)
Final Score Deepings 0 – St Ives 60
Final Note
As usual we are arranging a Presidents Game over the Christmas period. This will be Over 30s v Under 30s at the club on Monday 27th December (gather at 1p.m.). Although the game will obviously be for our players it would be good for all members to attend so we can have a social Christmas "get together".
With that in mind all families and children are welcome.
Please bring some Christmas Fayre with you as well.
