Old Bulls 39 vs St Neots Old Boys 12
A good natured game of rugby was played at the common this Saturday with local rivals St Ives taking on St Neots. Both teams were at full strength with the cancellation of their respective 2nd team games which also allowed for some raucous support from touchline.
The Old Bulls scored first after a darting run by scrumhalf Chris Bacon from the base of scrum near St Neots line.
Flyhalf Alfie Jenroy kept St Neots pinned back in their own half with a superb display of precision kicking and soon followed the conversion with a drop goal from the opposition 10 metre line.
Next to score was outside centre Nigel Sweeney after his partner in the centres, Andy Frear took the ball into contact and popped the ball out to a waiting Sweeney who outpaced the cover defence to score near the posts. Alfie duly slotted his second conversion.
The third St Ives try came from some good pressure by Australian openside Tom Beattie which resulted in turnover ball allowing some good handling by both forwards and backs to send No 8 Vinnie Woodward crashing over the line. Alfie converted again.
St Neots then rallied and scored an excellent try after some quick ball from a lineout allowed their inside centre to dance through St Ives defence to score near the posts. The conversion was made.
St Neots scored first in the second half after passing the ball along the line and their winger beating his opposite number to sprint to the line. The conversion was just missed.
The flying Frenchman, Alfie Jenroy, for St Ives then slotted a penalty after St Neots were judged to be offside at a ruck in their own 22m.
Vinnie Woodward then scored his second try after picking up from the base of a scrum and dazzling everyone with his blistering pace to touch down just to the left of the posts. Alfie converted again.
