St Ives Old Bulls vs Oundle Vets 57-0

St Ives Old Bulls continued their successful season with a strong performance against Oundle Vets.

The scoring commenced after 3 minutes after Oundle failed to secure possession from the kick and the old bulls recycled possession resulting with a score in the corner for outside centre Jeremiah Clotte.

This was the start of a nine try fest for the Old Bulls and an uncomfortable afternoon for Oundle.

St Ives dominated the set pieces throughout the game with a near perfect performance by the front row trio of Griffin, Lake and Underwood, supported ably in the engine room by Colin Hall and Jim Lewison.

The line outs for St Ives functioned well with Hall spoiling Oundle’s ball and taking his own at 2 in the line and in the second half Ray Marshall came on at Flanker giving the old bulls a second option at four in the line.

With forward dominance, the Old Bulls were able to supply their back line with a steady supply of quality ball with which to set up scoring opportunities.

The majority of the tries were scored in the backs but openside flanker, Andy Frear managed to get a hat trick with his tenancious tackling and determined support play, both centres Trevor Ayres and Jeremiah Clotte got 2 apiece, but they could have been scored by any number of people (excluding Graham Napper).

Flyhalf Alfie Salop scored his debut try for the club, after a great break and an outrageous dummy in the second half, and slotted 6 conversions.

Ian Scott also made his return to rugby at St Ives after a 20 year sabbatical with an impressive second half display on the wing, replacing a faultless performance by Ewen Patrick in the first half. He scored the best try of the game with the Old Bulls recycling possession from a lineout on Oundles 10m line after with the aid of some bullocking runs by back row forwards Mark Southern and Andy Frear. The ball was then released to the waiting back line by scrumhalf Nigel Sweeney and it passed through every pair of hands to allow Ian Scott to dive over dramatically in the corner to score.

The Old Bulls Continue their season with next Saturday with a game against Kettering Vets away.
