St Ives 19-Ely 7
After the success of last week when St Ives reached the Final of the Cambridgeshire Cup they entertained Ely at their Somersham Road Ground.
Kicking off downhill and with the breeze at their backs St Ives made the most of the conditions to take an early lead. With the pack dominating in the loose, pressure told and an excellent passage of passing found Ali Brown in space to go over for the first try.
With Jack Topham and Dan Malem keeping Ely in their own half with some effective kicking it was not long before St Ives went over the line for a second try. Once again the forwards were in evidence with two driving mauls allowing Nathan Dewar to break and score under the posts. Both try's converted by Dan Malem.
Five minutes before half time further pressure on the Ely line resulted in a well worked backs move ensuring Dan Malem could score in the corner. Unfortunately the conversion was missed.
The second half saw the advantage of the slope and the wind pass to Ely and for most of the half St Ives were pinned back in their own half with Full Back Jack Topham being kept busy chasing back and clearing his lines.
When St Ives did break out, strong running from Harry Martin, Alex Colah and Nick Mathews saw St Ives break over the gain line.
Ely managed to score and convert a consolation try three quarters of the way through the half but solid and stout defence by the home team ensured another successful result for St Ives.
