“Tag Rugby” - Tries Galore at St. Ives!

St. Ives Rugby Club recently held it’s annual Schools’ Tag Rugby tournament at the club’s ground in Somersham Road.

This year saw eleven teams from local primary schools playing matches in two pools, with over 100 children taking part in the fun. A large contingent of teachers and supporters were on hand to enjoy an afternoon of glorious sunshine, during which the children demonstrated some superb rugby skills. There were some closely contested encounters, with some very high scoring matches and all games were played with great heart and spirit. The children’s’ enthusiasm for this sport, which was new to many of them, shone through and their performances didn’t disappoint anyone.

The schools taking part were Thorndown, Godmanchester, Bury, St. Anne’s, Thongsley Fields, Buckden, Warboys and Ashbeach. All the children participating received commemorative medals, with trophies awarded to the pool winners, which were generously donated by Fenland Trophies. In addition “Fair Play” points were awarded throughout all the matches with trophies for the winners.
The winners of the pool trophies were as follows
Pool 1 – Buckden ‘A’, Pool 2 – St. Anne’s
The Fair Play awards were given to Thorndown ‘A’ from Pool 1 and the Ashbeach School from Pool 2. Both schools scored maximum points and demonstrated great competitive spirit. An additional trophy was awarded to Warboys School who again demonstrated great sportsmanship when losing out to Buckden ‘A’ on a “recount”! St. Ives RFC Club President, Jim Murdoch, presented the trophies and medals to the teams.

St. Ives RFC would like to thank everyone that supported the event, especially all the coaches and helpers that gave up their time to make the event possible and again to Fenland Trophies for donating the awards.

Mini Rugby starts again at St. Ives on Sunday 4th September with registration and pre-season training.
