Superb attacking display warms the crowd

On a bright crisp day, St. Ives put Rugby St. Andrews firmly in their place with a fine display of attacking rugby. From the off, the team was focused and determined.
An early perfect lineout execution saw David Stone feed Duncan Williams who crashed over to score in the opening minutes.
Ives defended the initial attacks of Rugby, but the visitors were making good ground. Approaching the Ives line, their enthusiasm led to an infringement at the break down allowing Ives a relieving kick. From the lineout, Ives swept upfield, with the ball travelling through multiple hands left and right. Albiee Tayedzerwa was finally freed down the right and squeezed in the corner for his first of a hatful.
Immediately from the kick off, the Bulls were pinned back on their own line. A successful lineout saw Paul Ashbridge receive the ball behind his own line. With the opposition bearing down on him, he chose to run. Breaching the initial defensive line, Ives kept the ball moving swiftly, the ball was kept alive until Gabriel Edwards finished off the 105 metre try under the posts.
No sooner had Alex Henly joined the fray for the unlucky Pete Fahey than he was also in on the act. Ashbridge once again made a great break through the midfield. The Bulls playing with élan whipped the ball through the hands and Henly gleefully crashed over.
Rugby had efforts to get back into the game repelled. In what was becoming a nightmare for Rugby, Ashbridge once more dashed upfield. Tayedzerwa was in support to complete his hat-trick.
Finally Rugby’s persistence was rewarded. Ives were guilty of some infringements which gave Rugby territory and lineout possession. After a couple of efforts, they grounded the ball for their first points.
There was still time before the break for Tayedzerwa to complete another fine team try.
Half time 41-5
The second half started scrappily for both teams. Ives found themselves on the wrong end of the whistle for various technical offences. The returning Josh Meadows was deemed the “next man” to offend after a team warning and saw yellow.
To the credit of the hosts, this galvanised them into action and they scored three tries whilst down to 14 men.
First a superb delayed pass by Mickey Drake was taken at full tilt by Ashbridge who went untouched through the defence to score under the posts.
Yet another turnover by Edwards gained Ives possession in their own half. Great continuity saw them deep into Rugby territory. As ever, Tayedzerwa was in support, and finished off the move for his fifth.
Edwards was having a superb wrecking ball of a game. His ferocious tackling saw him not only floor the visiting stand-off, but immediately to his feet he was off upfield. Through a couple of pairs of hands, the ball made its way to Drake who darted through to score.
Rugby were still playing. But, over ambition saw Jack Blackley snatch an interception and hare off with the ball. The support that was evident throughout the game eventually saw David Stone score under the posts. Ashbridge kicked his seventh conversion.
The last act of the game saw Rugby gain a consolation score. Wresting the ball from an Ives maul, the Rugby flanker darted up the wing past the cramp-stricken Tayedzerwa to score.
Ives celebrated for a nano-second as captain for the day Drake exhorted his troops to focus on next week’s fixture at Vipers. “This was a really good performance. We scored loads and defended well. We need to take that into next week and step up another level”.
The team then dashed over to the far pitch to support the Ives 2nds who were taking on Deepings in the Hunts & Peterborough Cup. Having been tied at 7-all for most of the game, there was an agonising finish to the match for St. Ives. An attacking lineout was flapped back and the first to react was the Deepings scrum half. Reaching the home 22, the ball was swept out with an overlap for a try.
With time still available, Ives put their all into getting what would have been a winning converted try. Within a metre of the line, the referee deemed the ball unplayable and Deepings had snatched the tie.
