Cup game try fest for St Ives.

Following a four game winning run St. Ives travelled to Peterborough Lions to contest the first round of the Hunts and Peterborough cup. Notable changes for the match saw the return of Tommy Newman and Pete Wood Eeles to the front row, Dan Seymour to the second row and James Cannon. The back line was as imposing as ever with Lee Bolger and Tom Mulqueen gaining a 1st Team run out.

Standing Captain Adam Scott lead the side out (Ross Thompson was off looking for new pots of Honey) following a minute silence following the passing of a Peterborough Lions Player a moment which brought the whole Rugby family together.

Having lost the toss St Ives were playing in to the sun for the first half and immediately dominated the Lions from kick-off, with the lions giving a penalty away within the first 5 mins, Jerome Walter kicked for line out possession inside the lions 22. Excellent work from the forwards allowed the ball to come out to the backs and James Wood scored his first of the day. This passage of play set the tone for the whole game the forwards dominated both the tight and open play and Michael Drake marshalling his backs well to convert opportunities in to tries.

James Wood crossed a further two times to complete a hat trick; Jerome Walter scored two tries following breaks off the back of the scrum by James Cannon. Tom Wakeley scored in the corner. John Paxton scored an excellent try from a run which started behinds St. Ives 10 metre line. Jerome Walter added 2 conversions and a penalty.

Lions stuck to their task well and scored a well deserved try on half time through their powerful running No 8. St. Ives team strength was continued with excellent performances from Olly Bartlett and Tim Lumley-Goode who started from the bench.

With so many stand out performances the Man of the Match award was a hard to decide, but following his best ever performance for the club the award went to Andy Grieve. Stand in Captain Adam Scott said ‘It’s an excellent feeling to travel away and put in such a dominating performance’. Next week St Ives travel to Biggleswade to take on the league leaders who will be a tougher proposition. St Ives are always looking for new players to join the club, training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the club house on Somersham Road St. Ives.
