Late tries gain Ives bonus points to keep top spot

All eyes were on the eagerly awaited match between the division’s top two sides and those watching were not disappointed.
Played in excellent conditions, the match was end to end throughout as both sides fought hard. A mention for the referee whose own clear and unambiguous arbitration made way for a game played in an excellent spirit.
Park struck first as they turned over possession and strung passes together to go over.
Ives responded immediately. A lineout close in was followed by a superbly set driving maul, with George Collet dotting down.
Ives were then guilty of some lax exit play. As the game entered its second quarter, they found themselves defending a 5 metre scrum. Initial defence kept Park out, but they finally got over the line.
The Bulls again fought their way upfield and released the backs. Oliver Giglio, who had a fine game in the centre, released Elliot Mortimer who was dragged down yards from the line. The supporting Henri Cole gathered to complete a fine try.
As the half was closing, the hosts applied more pressure. Held up over the line more than once by determined defence, they finally scored.
With the kickers converting all 5 tries, half time was 21-14 and all to play for.
Ives were architects of their own downfall for much of the second half as they frequently gave up possession with passes going to ground.
From one dropped ball, Park hacked through and the speedy winger grounded the ball just inside the dead ball line.
Another turnover following confusion in the Ives ranks saw the hosts dart through to increase their lead to 19 points.
Ives then demonstrated their resilience, focused on getting something from the game. With great continuity between forward and backs they made their way through multiple phases with Giglio on hand to complete a great team try.
The home fans became nervous as Ives were gaining the upper hand. With the clock against them, Ives continued to pummel the Park defence. With the last play of the game, Ives finally breached the defence as Jordan Hawes twisted his way through tackles to touch down.
DoR Duncan Williams had a mix of emotions. “We knew it would be a tough challenge as Stockwood are a very well drilled side . We’re disappointed to lose, but happy to leave with 2 bonus points which keeps us top of the table.”
