Ives made it three from three with a spluttering performance in blustery conditions.
Playing into the strong wind, the hosts started well and were soon on the board. Following good driving play, it was left to skipper Dan De’Ath to make the last yard to score.
There followed a twenty minute period where neither side could make inroads. Passes were spilled as the gusts caused the ball to dip and swerve in flight.
Ives tightened up the play and two quick tries from Henri Cole and Torv Romeis put them in control.
As the half was closing, the Bulls gained their try bonus point after swift hands. Eschewing a big overlap, Connor Newsome managed to stretch to dot down with two defenders hanging on.
Following a perfect record from the tee to date, Charlie Mandley managed just one conversion against the gale, half time score 22-0.
Ives started the second half well and Cole barged over for his second try of the game after a quickly taken penalty.
There followed 30 minutes of what can best be described as scrappy play. Neither side seemed capable of adapting their game to the conditions. Numerous scrums were evidence of efforts going to ground.
Positives were that Ives defence saw Lions attack frequently in reverse with their own ball. And when the visitors reverted to kicking, Ben Fleming returned well.
As the match was drawing to a close and with the visitors tiring, Ives added three tries. De’Ath barged over twice to complete his hat-trick.
With the final play of the game came a beauty. Mickey Drake, who played well at centre, took a quick tap and a fine line by the returning Josh Meadows saw him dart through a gap and score untouched.
With Mandley rediscovering his kicking boots, the Ives ran out deserving victors.
DoR Duncan Williams commented, “It was a disciplined if not always entertaining game. Another 5 points in the bag and we look forward to next week’s encounter at St Neots.”
