Strong away performance sees St Ives Ladies continue their winning start

Paul Cox

The Ladies back up their opening home victory with another impressive result on the road.

St Ives Ladies made it two wins from their opening two games of the season with an impressive 36–19 victory away to Ampthill & District on Sunday, overcoming a challenging first half before producing a dominant second-half performance.

Playing uphill in the first half, St Ives faced a tough test against an Ampthill side keen to make home advantage count. Ampthill opened the scoring with a converted try, but full-back Ellie Tod responded with St Ives’ first try of the afternoon. Ampthill added another try before the game took a further turn when a home player received a red card for a high tackle. Jen Parsons crossed for St Ives’ second try, but Ampthill responded with another converted try to take a 19–10 lead into half-time.

With the slope in their favour, St Ives returned determined to turn the game around. Tod scored her second try before Vic Shivers converted to close the gap. St Ives continued to build momentum as Tod completed her hat-trick. Parsons then grabbed her second try of the match, with Clare Brading adding the conversion to extend the visitors’ lead. Tod completed an outstanding individual performance with her fourth try of the afternoon, before Shivers added the final conversion to seal the 36–19 victory.

Having trailed 19–10 at half-time, St Ives showed excellent determination, composure and attacking quality to score 26 unanswered points in the second half.

Ellie Tod was named Overall Player of the Match following her four-try display, while Jen Parsons took Back of the Match after scoring twice. Laura Cutler was recognised as Forward of the Match for her performance in the pack.

There were further milestones to celebrate, as Kristina Giglio earned her 25th cap for the club. Harriet Mills, Amber Wilderspin and Pia Sargent also made their debuts for St Ives Ladies.

The result marks an excellent start to the season, with St Ives demonstrating their ability to respond under pressure and deliver a dominant second-half performance.

St Ives will now look ahead to Sunday 1st November, when they welcome Letchworth GC Ladies to The Chicken Shack, hoping to continue their winning start in front of their home supporters.
